About Us

In 1983, women came together with a common goal of wanting to improve the lives of those in need. They founded the Assistance League of San Jose. The original 66 members began with two philanthropic programs: Telecare, a program to reach out to homebound seniors, and a fingerprint program for children. Over the years, the programs have changed, the membership has grown but the goal remains the same, "Caring and Commitment in Action."

Members joined for different reasons: the desire to be involved in philanthropic programs, the need to stay involved and active after retirement, the enjoyment of working with like-minded women, the enjoyment of new social activities and a way to meet new people.
Members of Assistance League of San Jose are proud to be a chapter of national Assistance League®. Together with the other 122 chapters, more than two and a half million hours of community service are provided annually through volunteers committed to making a difference in their communities.

We rely on support from the community. Our programs are funded totally through contributions, grants and fundraisers. You may make a donation now to help ensure that these programs continue or expand. All contributions are gratefully acknowledged and are fully tax deductible.

If you would like to explore becoming a member of Assistance League of San Jose, please call (408) 268-6960 and we will return your call. You may also send email to ALofSanJose@aol.com. Informational meetings are held annually, but new members are welcome throughout the year.

Lynda Tomasello

“In 1982 when Pat Borges was asking all of her friends if they
would like to be part of a philanthropic organization she was
trying to form, she said ‘you can only play so much bridge and
golf, go to lunch and then it is time to give back to the
community.’ I decided to join immediately!”
